Along the edge – ALPI 1984-2024

ALPI celebrates four decades of design and innovation with the retrospective "Along the edge – ALPI 1984-2024"

During the design festival EDIT Cult (11–13.10.2024) the exhibition "Along the edge – ALPI 1984-2024" will welcome visitors to an overview of four decades of creativity illustrating the company's evolution in the design of wood surfaces thanks to collaborations with some of the greatest designers in the world.

The show curated by Piero Lissoni, the art director at ALPI, is hosted in the Sala Monumentale of the Real Museo Mineralogico, where ancient display cases contain geological collections of minerals. The contemporary objects built by ALPI, shown in the centre of the room, create a fascinating contrast between the historical setting and the modernity of the exhibited design pieces.

Says Vittorio Alpi: "The exhibition title describes our approach to design. We work on the borderline between two worlds – the natural and the artificial. On the one hand we create veneers that express the fact that they are truly wood. On the other hand we make veneers that do not exist in nature. The work we will be displaying at EDIT is furniture by well-known designers. All of it was built for a long-standing ALPI initiative. Every year, we ask a designer to create a veneer. And then, to illustrate its characteristics and suggestiveness, we ask them to design a few pieces using the new material. We say, 'You are free from commercial contraints. Let your imagination run wild.' Of course this rouses their enthusiasm. So we wanted to celebrate our 40th design anniversary by gathering these felicitous pieces together for the first time."
